A CALL FOR BETTER HOUSING AND FLOOR PLANS
In her presentation, Lisa van der Slot of de Zwarte Hond will highlight housing projects in the Netherlands including Mercado in Groningen which is part of a revitalisation development in the city and Familistère in Utrecht which emphasises community and sustainability. She also highlights the residential floor plan, the theme of the publication Out There #4.
Out There #4
Almost a million houses will be built in the Netherlands in the coming years. At the same time, we have crises on climate, energy, building costs, housing shortage and inclusivity. However, we notice that the discussion is mostly about the number of houses and not the quality. We can now make buildings that last more than a century. That obliges us to take responsibility. We can and must do better.
With Out There #4, we put the residential floor plan back on the agenda as a design assignment and place it in a broader context. We highlight the origins of the floor plan, different experts provide their views and we reach out for solution directions. With only minor adjustments, we can make our houses and residential floor plans a lot better, more fun and pleasing. At the same time, we believe that building those million homes in the Netherlands can lead to sustainable quality and an enrichment of housing typologies.
Out There #4, the bookazine published by architecture firm De Zwarte Hond, is an appeal for better residential floor plans. Besides Lisa van der Slot (architect), Henk Stades (co-researcher and architect-partner at De Zwarte Hond) is one of the initiators of this bookazine.
